The definition of submissive, according to Merriam-Webster is:
submitting to others.

Look up submit, as an intransitive verb, and here’s what you get: “1 a: to yield oneself to the authority or will of another : surrender b: to permit oneself to be subjected to something […] 2: to defer to or consent to abide by the opinion or authority of another.”

As you can see, with such a broad definition, being a sub means different things to different people! No matter how you define the specifics of being a submissive, there are some basic rules of thumb to follow in order to get the most out of each experience. Rules, as defined more specifically in the book Fetish:

Understand that being a sub is

not

about being a victim, totally helpless and/or lazy. It’s about your willingness to

serve another

      , and your willingness to

worship

      and

please

    .
A good sub always remembers the rules of the Mistress and does his best to uphold them, putting Her needs above his own.
A good sub expects nothing in return. If his Mistress decides to indulge him, that’s fine; but he should not expect it to be a regular occurrence.
A good sub pays attention to detail, knows the likes and dislikes of his Mistress and is eager to please Her in

every

way, including showering her with gifts.
As the property of his Mistress, it is a sub’s duty to take care of himself, remaining “fit, strong, and well groomed.”
Never, never, never be a whiny, complaining sub, or try to tell your Mistress what to do. If for some reason the sub is unhappy and wishes the scene to change, he should say “Mistress, I’m sorry to bother you, but…” and explain his wishes. At which point, the Mistress may or may not grant his request.

There you have it, subbies. Tune in for tomorrow’s blog post, “What makes a good Mistress?”
